Counseling Services
Individual CounselingI work with students one on one to address various concerns such as anxiety, depression, behavior management, etc. I also work with two or more students for a conflict resolution session. These sessions are designed to assist the students in solving a conflict on their own so they can begin to learn and practice these skills. My hope is that they can one day have the ability and confidence to use these skills without adult assistance.
Students may be referred to me by administration, teachers, parents or themselves. If I believe students would benefit from regular meetings to work on certain skills, I will contact the parent/guardian to discuss this option. When meeting with students on a regular basis I may come to the conclusion that the student may need mental health counseling and will refer the family to an outside mental health agency. Please visit the Mental Health Referral tab under Parent Resources for a list of local agencies. My individual counseling philosophy is student led. I allow the student to take the session where it needs to go based on their needs. If a student shares anything with me that gives me reason to believe they are being harmed, they want to harm someone else or they want to harm themselves I will notify the appropriate personnel immediately. |
Small Group CounselingI will be conducting small group opportunities when teachers see a need across the grade level. So as not to take away from their academic development, these meetings will be held during their lunch period. These small group sessions are often called a Lunch Bunch! Students participating in a group will bring their lunches to my office where they will have the opportunity to eat and learn. My small group counseling philosophy is more structured than my individual counseling philosophy. This is because I have limited time with the group to introduce and practice new skills. I try to stay away from assigning any homework but if I do, it is for practice!
These opportunities are by permission only so I will always send home a form about the group that will require a signature allowing the student to participate. Please visit the Lunch Bunch page under the Parent Resources tab to see what's going on in the building! |
Classroom Guidance LessonsClassroom guidance lessons give me the opportunity to go into the classroom and do a lesson with the entire class. If a teacher is seeing a particular issue throughout their class, it is beneficial to provide information to all students. I also use classroom guidance lessons to be proactive by providing information and skills to students in various areas.
